Contesting

For Stockport Radio Society, contesting plays a big part in our annual calendar,traditionally we have taken part in the major RSGB HF events such as the AFS(Affiliated Societies) contests in January, NFD (National Field Day), Low PowerField Day and SSB Field Day in September. However, recently and because of thechanging priorities of some of our members, we have started to take part inother events both portable and from our HQ at Benja Fold.

Whilst contesting is not every one's "cup of tea", we as a society,do try to encourage members to get involved with this side of the hobby for anumber of reasons.

• Helps members, particularly newcomers to develop their operating skills.
• Fosters a culture of healthy competition between other local clubs.
• As a club, we benefit from members coming together to operate as a team.
• Breeds a healthy social atmosphere between members.

Whilst as a club we've concentrated on taking part in HF events, some of ourmembers have branched out into taking part in some of the portable VHF eventswhich take place on Sunday afternoons during the summer months. These"Backpacker" events, which last for a socially acceptable 4 hourperiod have become very popular and allows someone wishing to get involved inportable contesting for the first time to do so with simple equipment.
